Japanese Itajime Shibori Example

Japanese Itajime Shibori Example

Sugar & Shibori classes have been a much requested class style by my regular students, and novices alike! Each session we will focus on 1-2 new shibori Japanese fabric dyeing techniques that you will be able to add to your repertoire, or will introduce you to the joys of creating unique fabrics.

Who will benefit from this class? Quilters who need some inspiring fabrics, fiber artists in need of new techniques, intermediate fabric dyers who want to expand their repertoire, crafters who need a super awesome tablecloth for their new booth, groups who need a day to explore their creativity…you!

What’s Shibori?  Shibori is a general term that encompasses hundreds of fabric dyeing technique that originated over 750 years ago in Japan. There are three main general types of Japanese shibori fabric dyeing techniques- nui shibori (sewn), itajime (folded and clamped) and arashi (pole-wrapped).My specialties are the nui and itajime, though we will explore some arashi, too. You will also learn how to make fiber reactive dye dyebaths which can come in handy for dyeing cloth 1 color, or many.Amber Coppings Designs hand-dyed shibori fabric samples 2012

What does my Materials Fee cover? The materials fee covers all dyes and chemicals you will use to create dyebaths to color your cloth. Also, students will receive all safety equipment and design materials (as needed per technique). You will also receive cotton fabrics to use as your first fabrics for any new technique. These will be great to keep in your fabric technique sketchbook to refer back to when you need them. You will also be welcome to bring one item from home to dye (optional).

Who can sign up? Currently, Sugar & Shibori classes are adult classes. Individuals who are 16+, mature and interested in the arts can attend if accompanied by an adult relative.

What is the Sugar part? The Sugar is going to be some baked treats that I will be providing each session (think brownies, cookies, scones…yum!), plus coffee and tea. We will first learn shibori techniques, make dyebaths, then eat and hang out as we wait for the dyebaths to take.
