For the last few months I have been taking some time each week to learn more about digital textile design. I bought a book that has been really helpful, “Digital Textile Design” by Melanie Bowls and Ceri Isaac. Each week I concentrate on learning a new skill, or keep practicing on an old one. Thankfully, my endless editing of photographs for my online shops have given me a good foundation of skills to work with!
Above is my first finished textile design pattern tile. Its inspired by this photograph I took in Costa Rica in May 2010. My creative inclination is to use photographs of places I’ve been to create a collection of fabrics to use in my own collections and, eventually, for others to buy as yardage. I’ve also been inspired by my boyfriend’s recent sculpture in the Pittsburgh Biennial 2011. Some of the detail shots of the piece and the paintings it produces are amazing! Check out more about his sculpture here.
