Riding the Line between Art, Craft and Fashion

I’ve been selling Xmittens for over 6 years now and have tried all sorts of things…retail shows, emerging artist shows, online sales, consignment, wholesale to boutiques around the world…but not a fashion wholesale show.  As a businessperson that has come from a background of fine art and craft I am really curious as to what it will be like to take Xmittens into the realm of Fashion ( with a capital F).  I mean, POOL is a part of a larger trade show circuit that includes MAGIC and PROJECT…these are the biggies in the fashion world!  The big brand stores will be there , as well as hundreds of boutiques and small chains.  Not only that, but I will also be able to check out new sources for fabrics.  YES!

Anyhow, I have always been more an art and craft person rather than  fashion person.  (That being said, I always did say I was going to be a fashion designer and artist when I grew up!)  I’ve had quite a few gallery shows and saw added opportunities for a bigger audience creating with what I am best at (color and texture!) by moving some of my skills into a production line of beautiful and comfortable items to wear.

For years I’ve sold Xmittens predominantly on the craftier side of things.  People in that world seemed to understand Xmittens and how they could enhance a DIYer’s crafty life.  Recently, however, craft shows are responding to my applications and saying Xmittens is more like fashion than craft.  Hmmm…Xmittens construction has not changed.  They are still made in my Pittsburgh studio using high quality control standards and recycled fabrics.  But maybe the jurors are seeing something I have not been planning? Maybe Xmittens are more fashion than craft?  Really, I think it’s kind of silly to differentiate in any strict sense, but it does seem like maybe I should take the hint and start moving into the fashion world a bit more.  So, I am going to document this slight change of pathways for my brand a little on my blog.  I know there are more of you out there wondering what direction to go.  I’ve decided to go down this path and incorporate it into the larger picture of how I see my business growing.  I’ll let you know how it goes as I move forward.

What pathways are you traveling down with your business/craftiness?  Leave a  comment and let me know what you are exploring.

Do you support local artists?

Well, there’s a great opportunity for people in the Pittsburgh region to support local artists this weekend! On Sunday May 22, come visit over 50 local artists at the yART sale at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (6300 Fifth Ave Pgh, PA 15232). Artists will have artworks, art supplies and more on sale…some even at a very deep discount!

I’ll have lots of fleece yardage on sale for $3/yd, baby onesies for $3-$7, jewelry supplies, discontinued Xmittens at 50% off and more!

Hope to see you there!

New Business Tips Email List!

This almost became the Xmittens logo in 2009!

2011 marks the 5 year anniversary of Amber Coppings Designs!

In honor of all that I have learned, I am starting a new Business Tips Email List.  Sharing resources is important to me and I’ve built up quite a list!  When you sign up, you will receive a my Top Six  Etsy Tips for free!  Even if you don’t have an Etsy shop, this list can easily be translated into tips for selling online in general.  After that, you will receive a business tips email from me about 2-4 times a month about topics ranging from marketing, to networking, to a cool business website I find useful.  Thanks so much for signing up!  You can do so by clicking here and checking the “Weekly Business Tips” box on the sign up form.

Thanks!

The Creative Empire

If you are like me, joining groups may not be your thing.  I like to work with people about as much as I like to work by myself.  Which means, I usually choose to go solo since then I don’t have to wash my hair and I can wear my pajamas whenever I want.  However, when Tara Gentile(previously mentioned here) and Megan Auman started The Creative Empire, I thought, “Why not join?  I can always cancel if it does not work.”  I’ve worked with Tara on my website for a couple of years now and really respect where she is coming from.  Megan’s Crafting an MBA website is FULL of good stuff…it seemed like a very small risk in what could be a great investment.

And it has been a wonderful community to join.

Probably, especially because I mainly work alone.  This community gives me a place to throw out ideas, offer help, get critiques on my website changes…all in a respectful forum.  Most people are in similar positions as myself: working solo, or mostly solo, trying to get a creative business off the ground and running.  It’s a supportive atmosphere without any pushiness, or snarkiness…and sometimes, I just laugh my ass off at people’s jokes (booze cake, anyone?).

So, in other words, I highly recommend joining this forum if you are a entrepreneur who needs a bit of a like-minded community, who likes to give and receive respectful advice and may need a kick in the pants now and then.  Check it out here.

Disclosure: I totally love this community and am providing an affiliate link.

Upcoming Spring 2011 Classes!

DIY Fabric Scraps Accessory by Amber Coppings Designs

Tara Gentile is a craft advocate goddess.  Not only is she a philosopher of creative living and DIY culture & lifestyle design expert, she runs a popular blog about combining passion and profit AND designed my wonderful and gorgeous website that you see right here!  She’s now teaching a Website Kick Start to help people have their own “home” on the web.  In my experience, having my own website that has my Fashion & Fabrics blog and Business Blog (that you are reading!), my shops and other awesome information like my available classes and tutorials has led to a huge growth spurt for my business.

Tara will help even the most computer illiterate person create a website that will help you gain more traffic, increase sales, or at the very least provide a simple web presence that can help propel your career.  I’ve been working with Tara in many capacities for almost 2 years now.  I definitely recommend working with Tara and this is an affiliate link.

Buy Xmittens, Help the Library!

This is my library!

I love the library!  When I was sick and had to stay home from school, I was allowed to watch TV for only a half an hour a day ( I always chose to watch The Monkees).  Instead, my mom would go to the local library and get me books.  Lots of books.

This has really shaped who I am.  I still read as much as I can and visit the library at least once a week.   As a small business owner, I use resources at the library I would have to pay lots of money for…help with research, books and audio e-books.  Thousands of people depend on the library to provide information and warm place to be.

Striped Xmittens Gloves

And I want to give back!  So, from December 13-18, for every Xmittens order I receive online I will donate $1 to the Carnegie Library system in Pittsburgh.  The Carnegie Library has been struggling due to the current recession and less tax and foundation money.   It is the least I can do.  So, if you have been waiting to buy your Xmittens for yourself, or as gifts, this is the week to do so!  Also, if you are going to be in Pittsburgh you can pick up your Xmittens on December 18 from my studio to save on shipping!  I will give you details after your purchase.

Happy Holidays everyone!
