Last chance for Website Kick Start class in 2011!

Message from Tara Gentile, entrepreneur guru and website kickstarter:

There are only 11 weeks left in 2011.

And there’s only 1 week left to grab a seat in the last Website Kick Start of 2011.

Why commit to learning how to build a website before the end of the year?

  • Because this is a skill that’s going to serve you for years to come.
  • Because your business deserves better than “some day.”
  • Because what you have isn’t cutting it anymore.

Why commit to reexamining your web presence before the end of 2011?

  • Because this isn’t just about code & pixels, this is about reexamining the way you market your business & communicate your vision.
  • Because this about you, your customer, and building a community.
  • Because 2012 is going to start with a bang.

Why have others commited to Website Kick Start?

“The skills I learned in Tara’s Website Kick Start course have taken me from visualizing a beautiful website to actually creating one and tweaking another to represent my custom brand.

I learned so much from her clear, accessible, fun lessons helping me to really understand the ins and outs of my site. Not to mention, the support is AMAZING. All of my questions (large and small) were answered thoroughly and in a speedy turnaround time. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend taking this class and taking ownership of your website!”
L’Erin Asantewaa

Whether this is a goal you had all year long… or one that finally looks feasible, this is your chance to get a website you love at the fraction of the cost of hiring a designer or developer.

And you keep these skills for life.

Are you ready to kick start your website? Click on, my friend, click on.

Upcoming Shows- Fall/Winter 2011

It’s officially Xmittens weather (at least where I live in Pittsburgh)!  It’s getting colder and I know I am enjoying the season that allows me to layer to my heart’s content…the first day of wearing a light sweater brings me much joy!

This is also the season when I travel around and vend at shows.  I’ve decided to keep it local this year since I’m saving my show traveling time for wholesale trade shows.  So, if you are in the Pittsburgh neighborhood during any of these show times, please stop by and say hello!  I love to meet my internet peeps.

Featured Item- Xmittens Hooded Jackets!

Something new from Amber Coppings Designs!  From now through the end of the year, I will be featuring items from the Xmittens and amtextiles lines.  Most will have a special discount for blog readers and extra special fans!  I’ll also be sharing little-known tidbits and practical advice on how to wear and use the items, too.

Make sure to check out the In-stock special on Xmittens Jackets here (hint, there’s a big discount involved!)

First up, Xmittens Hooded Jackets!  I first starting making these last year in 2010.  I had made it a personal goal to challenge myself to create a pattern that:

a) can be made in a variety of sizes, including plus-sizes,

b) could be made using a reasonable amount of fabric so that plus-sizes would not necessarily have to cost more,

c) would look good on a variety of body types.
Voila!  Xmittens Hooded jackets with Shawl Collar are a wonderful solution that have been purchased and worn on people from a size 2 to size 24 all with awesome feedback like:

“Thanks Amber! I love jacket! It fits really well!”, from a customer in Central Pennsylvania

and

“Amazing!” from a customer in Washington State.

Riding the line #3 Post-POOL Tradeshow

Whew!  Looking back at my summer, I realize just how much time I spent towards getting prepared for my recent first foray into wholesale trade shows, POOL.  POOL Tradeshow is a part of the giant MAGIC fashion trade show extravaganza that happens twice a year in Las Vegas.  All the big names in fashion are somehow available at a MAGIC show. Here are some initial thoughts on my experiences:

1) POOL Tradeshow is the smallest of the tradeshow at MAGIC.  After walking some of the shows in my brief breaks (thanks, Cherish, for being my right hand woman at the show!), POOL seemed to also be the busiest.  There were definitely lots of people milling about the other shows (and they were gigantic so maybe it just seemed like less people), but the energy level was much lower elsewhere.  POOL was just brimming with crazy ass people like the guy who roller skated around in a brigh red sequined jacket and all of the lovely Goth and Steampunk ladies and gents.   The music was definitely best at POOL, too.

2) People were at these trade shows to BUY.  I had the most sales I have ever had at any kind of in-person show.  Many stores bought enough to have an account while others bought samples to think about for later.

3)Being in the Cash & Carry section at POOL was advantageous since people could impulsively buy items right then and there rather than place purchase orders.  This meant I was selling to individuals at wholesale prices as well as to boutique buyers (some Cash & Carry folks opted to sell at retails unless someone met certain minimums.  I just made the decision to offer at all wholesale to attract all sorts of customers).

4) Being in the Cash & Carry section also had its downside.  It meant that some people did not buy because they did not want to add anything to their luggage to go home.  Most buyers are used to placing purchase orders that would be filled later.

5) Big retailers were not hanging out at POOL.  Maybe they were there, but they did not show me they were there.

6) It was super cool to walk around and check out some of the behind the scenes sales stuff for American Apparel and other large designers, or manufacturers.  Some of the booths were actually mini-stores!  I also saw a trend with denim and men’s casual shirts in particular where items were displayed in crumpled piles on the floor.  Kind of a weird display decision, but it actually seemed to work!

Have you ever attended a trade show, or retail show where you learned about a whole new part of your business?  Leave a comment with your experiences (or questions about POOL) below.

Riding the Line #2

POOL Tradeshow ad with Xmittens!

This time next week I am going to be speaking with, schmoozing with, selling to and partying with some of the biggest buyers in the fashion industry.

In some moments, I am excited, in others, overwhelmed.  In all moments I am dependent on my trade show plan.  This way, I can keep my overwhelmed feelings at bay while getting things done.  Here’s a little look at my Trade Show plan:

1) Participate in ALL free opportunities from promotion and press.  The montage of photos above is from a POOL email and Facebook blast.  Exhibitors had the option of submitting photos and information that the POOL administration could use to promote the show and the exhibitors.

2) Bring a friend.  I’m actually bringing two: Cherish, my best friend and the best salesperson I know and Adam, my partner and the most efficient setter-upper I’ve had the pleasure to set up with.  Between the three of us, any trade show “emergency” will be taken care of.

3) Change from a “retail buyer” mindset to a “wholesale buyer” mindset.  This was the hardest part of my plan.  I am very used to dealing with retail buyers.  I can talk to all sorts of retail customers and understand where they are coming from and try to help them find the best Xmittens item for their lifestyle.  A wholesale buyer is a different kind of customer.  They are buying en masse and may have different clientele than my normal retail buyer.  Not only that, but the Cash & Carry section I am in at POOL Tradeshow does not allow purchase orders, instead I am selling product directly to the wholesale buyer. This requires A LOT of inventory in a SMALL space (6 foot table and storage underneath- that’s it!).  So, after speaking with some of my favorite business advisors, I realized that for months I’ve really been planning a retail show and not a wholesale show.

Off to my studio to keep plugging away at my new plan.  Any advice, or thoughts about trade shows?

Riding the Line between Art, Craft and Fashion

I’ve been selling Xmittens for over 6 years now and have tried all sorts of things…retail shows, emerging artist shows, online sales, consignment, wholesale to boutiques around the world…but not a fashion wholesale show.  As a businessperson that has come from a background of fine art and craft I am really curious as to what it will be like to take Xmittens into the realm of Fashion ( with a capital F).  I mean, POOL is a part of a larger trade show circuit that includes MAGIC and PROJECT…these are the biggies in the fashion world!  The big brand stores will be there , as well as hundreds of boutiques and small chains.  Not only that, but I will also be able to check out new sources for fabrics.  YES!

Anyhow, I have always been more an art and craft person rather than  fashion person.  (That being said, I always did say I was going to be a fashion designer and artist when I grew up!)  I’ve had quite a few gallery shows and saw added opportunities for a bigger audience creating with what I am best at (color and texture!) by moving some of my skills into a production line of beautiful and comfortable items to wear.

For years I’ve sold Xmittens predominantly on the craftier side of things.  People in that world seemed to understand Xmittens and how they could enhance a DIYer’s crafty life.  Recently, however, craft shows are responding to my applications and saying Xmittens is more like fashion than craft.  Hmmm…Xmittens construction has not changed.  They are still made in my Pittsburgh studio using high quality control standards and recycled fabrics.  But maybe the jurors are seeing something I have not been planning? Maybe Xmittens are more fashion than craft?  Really, I think it’s kind of silly to differentiate in any strict sense, but it does seem like maybe I should take the hint and start moving into the fashion world a bit more.  So, I am going to document this slight change of pathways for my brand a little on my blog.  I know there are more of you out there wondering what direction to go.  I’ve decided to go down this path and incorporate it into the larger picture of how I see my business growing.  I’ll let you know how it goes as I move forward.

What pathways are you traveling down with your business/craftiness?  Leave a  comment and let me know what you are exploring.

Do you support local artists?

Well, there’s a great opportunity for people in the Pittsburgh region to support local artists this weekend! On Sunday May 22, come visit over 50 local artists at the yART sale at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (6300 Fifth Ave Pgh, PA 15232). Artists will have artworks, art supplies and more on sale…some even at a very deep discount!

I’ll have lots of fleece yardage on sale for $3/yd, baby onesies for $3-$7, jewelry supplies, discontinued Xmittens at 50% off and more!

Hope to see you there!
