In 2004, I started making Xmittens to keep warm in my cold studio. I had just graduated from college, survived a terrible car accident and learned how to walk again. I was totally unsure of what to do next, so I concentrated on learning new skills in the realm that has always excited me most: textiles.
I’ve always believed that there needs to be an alternative to today’s “Fast Fashion” apparel industry. As I explored my textile passions, I realized that I could create an alternative textile and apparel business that emphasizes eco-accountability, thoughtful design and material sourcing, creates well-fitting and durable items, and considers the body an exhibition space for functional art-to-wear.
Amber Coppings Designs is the creative alternative to mass market fashion I have always envisioned.
Comfortable fit, creative textile techniques and eco-friendliness are emphasized in all of my business and creative decisions. Each item that I create goes through countless manifestations before being offered for sale. Nothing is included in my apparel lines until I know that the design is durable, attractive and eco-responsible. Fabrics and findings are mainly sourced from U. S companies to reduce the carbon footprint of my business. A majority of the items are made with recycled, or upcycled materials including fabrics I have used in sculptures and art installations! Items are made in my textile studio in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
You can find out more about my personal journey as a creative person in My Story blog series. You can find out more about my businesses eco-friendly efforts on my Sustainability Profile Page. Also, I’ll be posting updates about my explorations as well as interesting tidbits about other designers, methods and textiles in the Fashion & Fabrics section of my blog.
